More Than Just a Toxin Binder
*Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites synthesized by fungi (molds). Fungi that produce mycotoxins are present worldwide. Numerous mycotoxins are found as natural contaminants in feed and feed ingredients. The toxic effects of mycotoxins on animals and human health are defined as mycotoxicosis. Mycotoxins can cause acute, subacute, and chronic symptoms in dairy cattle and poultry. Clinically recognizing cases of mycotoxicosis is difficult, so the detection of molds and toxins in feed must be determined through analysis.
*The fundamental principle of mycotoxin control is to ensure hygienic feed production through a series of precautions taken from harvesting to storage and even until the animal consumes it. However, in situations where necessary precautions against microbial contamination are not taken and toxin formation cannot be prevented, removing toxins from feed or neutralizing their poisonous effects becomes economically crucial. Various substances are added to diets for the detoxification and/or reduction of the toxic effects of mycotoxins, aiming to prevent the absorption of mycotoxins in the gastrointestinal tract and their excretion from the body.
